A case of avian influenza detected in Camargue flamingos
A pink flamingo infected with the H5N1 avian influenza virus was discovered in mid-November near the Scamandre pond, in Vauvert. This sad discovery required a prefectural decree detailing precisely what can or cannot be done in the concerned area. However, our flamingo friends do not seem to be very affected by this virus, so let's keep our fingers crossed that it continues like this.
Another "comforting" news is that the genetic analyses performed so far in the current wave of Influenza in France and Europe do not show any mutation indicating an increased risk for humans through a particular possibility of transmission of the virus from birds to mammals.
If you want to know more about avian influenza and the impacts it can have on wildlife, human health and livestock, we encourage you to read the thematic article of the last Tour du Valat newsletter which deals with this subject: Avian Influenza: What are the challenges for human health, livestock and wildlife?

A look back at Sponsor's Day
On November 12, 2022 took place the day of the sponsors! This day was reserved for the sponsors of ideal flamingos who thanks to this offer benefit from this counterpart.
The sun, as well as the flamingos, were there.
Among the numerous rings observed by the sponsors present at this day, 45 different flamingos were concerned, among which 5 Andalusian, 30 from the Camargue, 2 Catalan, 1 Italian of the delta of the Po and 7 Sardinian.
On the 30 flamingos from the Camargue, 12 are sponsored flamingos, Cupidon, Manon or Barnabé, members of our families, but also Rouyoux or Corinne, ideal flamingos. |

Save the date!
The Tour du Valat will open its doors on Sunday, February 5, 2023.
Flamingos and the Tour du Valat are a great love story! When Luc Hoffmann, the founder of the Tour du Valat, arrived in the Camargue in the 1950s, he was keen to study flamingos and quickly set up ringing sessions to better understand these birds. Since then, the Tour du Valat has continued to study them and to ensure that the species remains in good health.
During this Open Day (free of charge and without reservation, from 8.30am to 5pm, food-trucks available), you will be able to meet part of the Adopt a Flamingo team but also discover other research themes of the Tour du Valat through animations, nature outings, conferences and walk around the reserve managed by the Tour du Valat.
