Here is the first Gazette of the year! It's an opportunity to welcome all our new sponsors.
It's been a little long in coming, it's true! But as we wrote to you several weeks ago, we had some problems with our website, which kept us busy at the beginning of the year! Since then, fortunately, everything is back to normal, and we even took the opportunity to make some improvements on your personal area (concerning the addition of a beneficiary when you offer a flamingo or to facilitate the renewal of your sponsorship).
In this newsletter you will learn more about how to observe flamingos, their make-up, the great travelers who are not afraid of anything and about the Tour du Valat which is at the origin of "Adopt a flamingo".
Have a good read!

Gimme your science! Flamingos wear makeup to stay pink
A study was conducted by Spanish and French teams to better understand the role of makeup in the maintenance of coloration in flamingos. It suggests that UV rays dull the pink coloration of feathers and that only the regular application of pigments during grooming would allow the birds to maintain the brightness of their parade clothes. But do you know where this makeup comes from?

From Sicily to the Emirates
| |
E:HJV is the first Mediterranean flamingo observed in the Arabian Peninsula (in Umm al Qawain). This young flamingo, born in Sicily was ringed in July 2021. At only a few months old, he bravely took flight to cover the 4,500 kms that separate Italy from the United Arab Emirates. This is enough to impress the whole Aventurière family and to make Dora or Paulo, the daughter and the son, want to fly!

News from LATZ and LAVZ
|
|
For a few Gazettes now, we have taken the habit of giving you some news of our two flamingos equipped with GPS tags. They are the only flamingos whose movements we can follow daily.
LATZ still finds the South-East of France to his liking and has not yet decided to explore other regions or to change country...
LAVZ on the contrary, seems to have the itch. He had quickly taken the direction of Spain at the end of the year 2021. But, his journey does not stop there! He crossed the Mediterranean to explore Africa, landing not far from Oran. What will be his next stop?

Tour du Valat and the Greater Flamingo
| |
Who is behind Adopt a Flamingo? Do you know the Tour du Valat?
The Tour du Valat is a research institute based in the Camargue, the land of the Greater Flamingo. It has over 80 employees (researchers, technicians, communication officers...) who work for the conservation of wetlands. While the latter have been disappearing at an unbridled rate for 50 years, the Tour du Valat fights to protect them and warns of their major role in maintaining a healthy biodiversity. Greater flamingos have not escaped the curiosity of Tour du Valat researchers who have been studying them since the 1950s. Thus, a small team decided to develop "Adopt a flamingo" a few years ago, convinced that this initiative would help finance some of the work on flamingos and raise public awareness about the fate of flamingos and the wetlands they need to live.

Climate change "trims" the wings of birds
In Albania, a decrease in the number of migratory birds has been observed for several years and the director of the national park explains that global warming has disrupted migration and breeding seasons.
While waiting for more in-depth studies to know the precise reasons for the changes in trajectories, experts note that some migrants no longer need to spend the winter in the small Balkan country. If there are no temperature extremes in northern Europe, birds may stay put or migrate shorter distances.

They saw them!
|
| In the last few weeks, we have received pictures from observers that allow us to update our database, to know more about the flamingos' movements and to send nice pictures to the lucky sponsors who have the chance to see their flamingo immortalized! Thanks to Stella, Céline, Bérenger and Claire (to name a few) for sharing.
