Why should you adopt a Greater Flamingo?

By adopting a Greater Flamingo, you’ll not only be helping the whole species, but also the wetlands necessary for its survival. The Tour du Valat and an entire network of observers throughout the Mediterranean will thus be able to carry on their efforts to protect this emblematic species.

With your adoption, you are directly involved in the study and protection of Greater Flamingos by financing, among other things, population monitoring activities as well as the purchase of the equipment required for observers in North Africa, West Africa, and the Middle East.

It’s not easy to read the rings attached to the legs of a Greater Flamingo, and errors are sometimes made due to poor quality equipment. It is therefore essential to use telescopes to read the bands from a distance (cost of a telescope: €1,500).

A few numbers

More than 4,000 people have adopted a flamingo, joining us in our mission to protect this remarkable species.

Over 900 000 ring readings since 1977 performed by 5 900 different people.

Over 72,000 flamingos ringed since 1977, including nearly 30,000 chicks in the Camargue.

A telescope allows us to read the bands from up to 300 meters away, compared to just 50 meters with binoculars.

We have three different Greater Flamingo adoption plans :
